Trends Autumn/Winter '09-'10: Jackets (Part 3)

The Chanel-boxy shape jacket

Influenced by the 2009 biographical film Coco : Before Chanel (Sony Pictures), classic Chanel-style boxy jackets were in abundance on the runways,

updated with embellishments such as beading and studs and tweed ruled ( I spied some in denim even!).

To update it, designers reworked the shoulders and made it slightly stronger.

Back in the 80’s, my mom used to wear this type of jacket with a string of pearls and pencil skirts and I used to find it excruciatingly stylish (even before I knew what ‘stylish’ means!).

How to wear it?

Because they can look quite matronly, it’s important to wear it right. The rule is simple. Boxy on top – slim on the bottom. Mrs Becks and Mrs Jay are big fans.

For an up to date or edgy look, pair them with tough (studs, hardware etc.) accessories. Again, this is an item that looks great with thigh high boots.
